01TIER RANGES

What each tier charges

T-01

Tire shop with alignment rack

2-WH$50 to $804-WH$80 to $120

PLAN STRUCTURE

Free or steeply discounted with a tire purchase

EXAMPLES IN THIS TIER

Les Schwab in the Pacific Northwest, regional tire stores

NOTES

Bundling alignment with a 4-tire purchase is the single best way to lower the bill. Many tire-focused stores include alignment at no extra charge with a full-set purchase.

T-02

Independent mechanic

2-WH$60 to $904-WH$80 to $130

PLAN STRUCTURE

Sometimes available, varies by shop

EXAMPLES IN THIS TIER

Local family-run shops, neighborhood garages with a Hunter or John Bean rack

NOTES

Often the best value if the shop has modern equipment and a tech experienced with your vehicle type. Read recent reviews and ask whether you get a printout.

T-03

National chain shop

2-WH$60 to $1004-WH$80 to $200

PLAN STRUCTURE

Multi-year warranty plans, 1 to 5 yr typical

EXAMPLES IN THIS TIER

Firestone, Pep Boys, Meineke, Mavis, NTB, Valvoline (select stores)

NOTES

Multi-year alignment plans are concentrated in this tier. Watch for $20 to $30 off coupons online or in seasonal promotions before booking.

T-04

Dealership

2-WH$90 to $1404-WH$120 to $260

PLAN STRUCTURE

Rare

EXAMPLES IN THIS TIER

All factory-authorized dealer service departments

NOTES

Highest cost in the comparison. Worth it for vehicles with ADAS that needs OEM-only diagnostic tools, EVs, or heavily out-of-spec luxury cars.

02NO ALIGNMENT

Shops that do not offer alignment

Walmart Auto Care

Walmart discontinued wheel alignment at most locations. Tire mounting, balancing, and rotation are still on the menu, but alignment is not. The closest budget alternatives are an independent shop or a chain with a low-end tier.

Costco Tire Center

Costco does not offer alignment. Their tire centers handle mounting, balancing, rotation, and flat repair only. If you buy tires there, plan to schedule alignment elsewhere.

Discount Tire / America's Tire

Tire-only retailer. They sell, mount, and balance tires but do not perform alignment. Many locations have informal referral relationships with nearby alignment shops.

04DECISION GUIDE

How to pick

Lowest single-visit cost

Independent shop with a coupon, or a chain in seasonal promotion. Bundling with a tire purchase often beats both.

Best long-term value

A multi-year plan in the chain-shop tier. Most break even at the second visit and pay back generously after that.

Most convenient

Whichever shop is closest. Driving 30 minutes for a $20 saving is rarely worth it once fuel and time are counted.

Best for ADAS-equipped vehicles

Dealership, or a chain location that has confirmed ADAS calibration equipment. Call ahead to verify.

Best for modified vehicles

A specialist independent shop that works with lifted trucks or lowered cars. Chains may not have the experience or aftermarket spec sheets.

Best for the budget-conscious

Bundle with new tires. A second-best option is to time a chain visit to coincide with a posted online coupon.

05COUPON SOURCES

Where to find current discounts

  • Brand websites: the chains' own service pages post current offers, often with online-only discount codes.
  • Google Business listings: many local shops post alignment promos directly on their Google Business profile.
  • RetailMeNot and Groupon: regularly carry $10 to $30 off alignment offers, mainly from chains.
  • Direct mail: chains frequently send coupons to addresses near their stores.
  • Tire-purchase bundle: almost every shop discounts or includes alignment with a 4-tire purchase. Often the best deal available.
06FAQ

Common questions

Q.01Does Walmart do wheel alignments?+
No. Walmart Auto Care Centers discontinued alignment at most locations. They still mount, balance, and rotate tires, but alignment is not part of the standard service menu. Look at an independent shop or a low-end tier of a national chain instead.
Q.02What is the cheapest place to get a wheel alignment?+
Independent shops and the lower end of the national chain tier typically offer the lowest standalone prices. Bundling alignment with a tire purchase at a tire shop is often the cheapest path overall, sometimes free as part of the tire promo.
Q.03Should I go to a dealership for alignment?+
Usually no. Dealerships charge the highest prices but use the same Hunter and John Bean alignment racks that quality independents and chains use. The exception is vehicles that need OEM-only diagnostic tools for ADAS calibration. EVs and newer luxury cars are the most likely to fall into that category.
Q.04Does the shop matter for alignment quality?+
The equipment and the tech matter more than the brand. Modern alignment racks are highly accurate. Quality indicators: the shop provides a before-and-after printout, inspects suspension components first, test drives after, and the tech has experience with your vehicle type. A good independent matches a good chain.
